This is not just any classic Volkswagen Beetle. It is a California blue plate car that was taken apart and restored by the seller over a three-year period. Work was completed in 2015 and about 3,000 miles have been added since then.

Dressed in black over red, the car’s paint and trim are in overall great shape. It retains the factory bumpers, lighting, wheels and exterior trim. There is also a factory sunroof. However, the bumpers show some imperfections, though all of the body rubber around the doors and windows has been replaced.

This Bug rolls on new Fusion CX-668 radials, 205/65R15 in back and 165/80R15 in front. Each tire is mounted to a factory wheel. The tires and wheels all look good. The underside of the car, including the inner wheel wells, is nicely finished. The rear suspension is stock, with new, OEM-type bushings, shock absorbers and bump stops. Up front are new polyurethane bushings, OEM tie rods, center links and springs plus EMPI strut inserts in two-inch drop housings. Rear brakes have all-new components and the front benefits from EMPI disc brakes with new brake lines and a new master cylinder.

A rebuilt 1.9L flat, air-cooled four-cylinder engine with dual Weber carburetors, ceramic coated headers and exhaust. and electronic ignition. Other work includes a rebuilt master cylinder, EMPI front disc brakes, rebuilt rear drums, new EMPI strut inserts and two-inch drop strut housings. Wear items throughout the suspension were replaced.

The interior has been made to look like the exterior. The black vinyl front bucket seats and rear bench seat are standard but the door and rear interior panels have been upgraded with black and red vinyl. The three-spoke, aftermarket steering wheel wears a red rim. A black, carpeted dash pad hides some cracks in the dashboard. The gauges are from VDO and a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with a CD player.

The interior has been upgraded with modern sound deadening material. The pillars and headliner are neatly wrapped in the same black vinyl as the headliner. More sound deadening covers the engine bulkhead.

For 1974, North American models received newly required five mph impact bumpers mounted on self-restoring energy absorbers, which added approximately 0.98 inches to the car’s overall length. On the Super Beetle, the steering knuckle, and consequently the lower attachment point of the strut, was redesigned to improve handling and stability in the event of a tire blowout.
