While Tri-Five Chevrolets remain highly desirable, that does not mean collectors and classic car fans should overlook competing models, such as Ford’s Sunliner Convertible from 1956. This example was made in Ford’s Atlanta, Georgia factory (VIN code A) and is one of 58,147 Sunliners made in 1956.
Dressed in Fiesta Red (code K) over Colonial White (code E) with a white, power-folding canvas top, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The car’s chrome bumpers are in excellent shape and fit tightly to the body. The chrome bumpers with bumper guards look great and fit tightly to the body. The cargo area is clean and has a full-size white stripe radial mounted on a red wheel mounted inside, the tire is in decent order. There are Blue Dot taillights out back, rear fender skirts along with a Continental spare tire kit. The engine bay is very tidy and appears to have a new battery.
This Sunliner rolls on BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall radials, size P205/75R15 at all four corners and mounted on chrome wire wheels with center spinners.
Under the hood is a 292 CID Y-block V-8 engine with Thunderbird valve covers and breathing via dual exhausts. Backing this motor is a Ford-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.78:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power brakes.
A gorgeous red-and-white vinyl interior (code BU1) complements the exterior. The front and rear bench seats look great, as do the inner door panels. The red-and-white dashboard with a full array of gauges looks great and is framed by a red, three-spoke steering wheel. A column-mounted shifter and a factory AM radio complete the interior.
The 1956 Ford varied only moderately from the 1955 models. The taillights were larger, and the grille completely filled the opening with chrome parking light housings wrapping around the front of the fender opening. New models for 1956 were the Parklane two-door sport wagon, the Customline Victoria two-door hardtop and the four-door hardtop Fairlane Town Victoria. There were new convenience options, such as a new air-conditioner system, a new heater, and a nine-tube signal-seeking radio. Instead of gauges, instrument cluster warning lights for oil pressure and ammeter were standard.
Competition to this Ford in 1956 included Chevrolet’s Bel-Air Convertible, Plymouth’s Belvedere Convertible and Pontiac’s Star Chief Convertible.
If you’re seeking a classic Ford convertible to cruise in as well as for a mobile investment, ignore the Tri-Fives and take a look at this Ford Sunliner at Mission Classics.
